Back Country Cooking

Back Country Cooking

ADULT HELP REQUIRED!

Are you missing getting into the great outdoors on one of our tramping camps and just wish you could have some good back country tucker?

or maybe you miss using our camp cookers at CYC.

Either way we have you covered with you very own Hobo Stove for cooking on.

*** Please get an older person to help you make this stove and cook on it***

YOU WILL NEED

An A10 Tin (the really big catering tins, it can work with a 810gm tin but your cooking surface is a lot smaller)

An old style can opener

Tin snips

Gardening gloves

A tuna can

cardboard

candle wax or preserving wax.

or a candle for underneath your tin

Step 1

Take an empty tuna can and mark a piece of corrugated cardboard at the height of the can.

Cut strips from the cardboard and roll into a tight coil. Keep adding to the coil until the diameter is just large enough to fit inside the tuna can. The number of strips you’ll need will depend on the size of your cardboard sheet

Pack cardboard coil into tuna can as snugly as possible. The tighter the can is packed, the longer the “buddy burner” will burn.

Melt wax from old candles or store-bought paraffin and pour slowly over the cardboard. Once full, wait a couple of minutes and re-fill after the cardboard has soaked up the wax. Repeat if necessary until completely saturated. Allow to dry completely and store in a cool, dry place until ready to use.

Step 2

Put your gloved on to protect your hands while you are working with your large tin.

Take your large empty clean Tin and flip it over, so the bottom is at the top.

Along the closed end, make six holes around the rim using an old style can opener.

Then using the tin snips, make two cuts in the bottom (open) end 6cm long and spaced 8cm apart. Bend outward to open the damper.

Step 3

Your Hobo stove is ready for cooking on. You can either cook using the surface of the tin and some oil or you may wish to use a frying pan on top of your stove.

Remember to always have a bucket of water beside you while cooking in case any accidents happen and always use your Hobo Stove outside on a flat surface like a path or some dirt.

Try cooking some of these items on your new Hobo Stove:

  • Pre-cooked sausages
  • Pancakes
  • Hamburger patties
  • Fritters
  • Eggs

When you have finished make sure you fire is completely out
